In this class (Class 22) we discuss verses 57–65 of chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita as well as Sri Ramanuja's commentary on these verses (contained on pp. 31-33 of this PDF)
Study Questions:
1. Verses 2.62–63 of the Gita describe a psychological chain-reaction that begins with dwelling on sense-objects and ends with spiritual “death.” How are these verses helpful to us as spiritual aspirants? How might these verses help people to overcome substance addictions (addiction to alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, etc.) and behavioral addictions (addiction to social media, etc.)?
2. According to Sri Aurobindo, how does verse 2.61 ("tāni sarvāṇi saṁyamya...") hold the key to understanding the surrounding verses 2.60 and 2.62-65? (Sri Aurobindo's commentary on verses 2.60-65 are contained in pp. 100–101 of his Essays on the Gita.)
3. According to Sri Ramanuja, how does verse 2.61 ("tāni sarvāṇi saṁyamya...") hold the key to understanding the surrounding verses 2.60 and 2.62-65? (Ramanuja's commentary on verses 2.60–65 are contained in pp. 31–33 of the PDF of the srimatham.com translation.)
4. Do you think Ramanuja's and Sri Aurobindo's interpretations of verses 2.60–65 are complementary or conflicting? Why or why not? 5. Do you have any questions about the reading? Did you have difficulty understanding anything? Do you have any doubts or confusions?
